Warren Buffett Steps Down as Berkshire Hathaway Chairman, Ending a Six-Decade Era
In a landmark shift for global finance, Warren Buffett has stepped down as chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, concluding more than six decades at the helm of the $1 trillion conglomerate. The 96-year-old legendary investor announced the transition in a letter to shareholders, confirming that his son, Howard Buffett, will assume the role of chairman effective immediately.
Howard Buffett, who has served as a Berkshire director since 1993, takes over the chairmanship while Chief Executive Officer Greg Abel continues to manage the conglomerate's vast daily operational footprint. The elder Buffett will remain on the board of directors, continuing to offer strategic counsel and guidance to executive leadership.
“Serving as your Chairman has been the privilege of a lifetime, and I have never taken your trust for granted,” Buffett wrote in his letter. “Father Time always wins. He has, however, been generous with me. The company is in excellent hands, and I look forward to remaining a shareholder alongside you.”
Buffett’s leadership transformed Berkshire Hathaway from a struggling New England textile manufacturer into one of the most powerful corporate behemoths in modern history. Under his stewardship, the company amassed an unparalleled portfolio spanning insurance, freight rail, energy, and major equity holdings in global technology and consumer brands. Beyond capital allocation, Buffett shaped the broader culture of value investing. Each year, tens of thousands of shareholders and admirers traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, for Berkshire's annual meeting, an event famously dubbed the “Woodstock of Capitalists”, while millions absorbed his annual shareholder letters as essential business wisdom.
While the transition marks the official end of an extraordinary managerial era, Berkshire’s decentralized operational structure and immense balance sheet position the firm for continued stability as Howard Buffett and Greg Abel guide the conglomerate into its next chapter.
