How the boards are built

Every figure on a Buysiders board is read from a document that is open to the public, and every row links to it. Where a number cannot be linked, the board does not carry it. This page says what each board measures, what it leaves out, and how often it changes.

The rule

A figure that cannot be tied to a filing is not published. That is the whole rule, and it decides what these boards can and cannot rank. It is also why two of them rank managers on capital raised rather than on performance: performance is not filed, and a league table of numbers nobody can check is not a league table.

The boards

Hedge Funds
Metric
13F long US equity
Definition
The market value of the manager's long positions in US-listed equities, as reported on Form 13F to the SEC.
Source
SEC Form 13F, read each quarter
Cadence
Quarterly, with the filing. Currently Q2 2026.
Not counted
Short positions, derivatives, credit, private holdings and every non-US listing. A credit or macro manager will sit far below its real size here.
Private Equity
Metric
Capital closed in filed funds
Definition
The sum of the closed size of every private equity fund the register holds for that manager, counting only funds whose row carries a link to the filing the figure came from.
Source
7,543 filed funds across 1,808 managers, from JIAA Japan fund register; MAS Singapore VCC register; SEC Form ADV, private fund schedule.
Cadence
Rebuilt when the register is re-read. Last generated 2026-09-21, newest filing read 2026-07-22.
Not counted
Funds the register holds with no link to their filing, and every vehicle raised outside the registers above. Rows are filers: one manager that files through several entities appears more than once.
Venture Capital
Metric
Capital closed in filed funds
Definition
The sum of the closed size of every venture capital fund the register holds for that manager, counting only funds whose row carries a link to the filing the figure came from.
Source
10,763 filed funds across 1,806 managers, from JIAA Japan fund register; MAS Singapore VCC register; SEC Form ADV, private fund schedule.
Cadence

Real Estate
Metric
Capital closed in filed funds
Definition
The sum of the closed size of every real estate fund the register holds for that manager, counting only funds whose row carries a link to the filing the figure came from.
Source
1,140 filed funds across 320 managers, from SEC Form ADV, private fund schedule.
Cadence
Rebuilt when the register is re-read. Last generated 2026-09-21, newest filing read 2026-07-22.
Not counted

Sovereign funds, pension funds and asset managers
Metric
AUM as last publicly disclosed
Definition
The figure the fund itself published, taken from its own report or factsheet.
Source
Each fund's own disclosure, linked on the row.
Cadence
As often as the fund publishes: monthly for Norges Bank, quarterly for some, annually for the rest.
Not counted
Any fund that does not publish. These boards are hand-maintained and each entry carries its source URL.

What these boards never publish

Fund-level net returns (IRR, TVPI, DPI, quartile)

Private fund performance is reported to a fund’s own investors, not to a public register. The record holds performance for a small minority of funds, and ranking that minority as though it were the market would misstate both the winners and the field.

Assets under management

AUM is not a filed fact for most managers. A probe of every taxonomy for BlackRock, KKR, Ares, Blue Owl, Carlyle, TPG, Invesco, Brookfield and Blackstone found no AUM tag on any of them. It lives in earnings prose, so it cannot be sourced the same way twice.

Anything about an individual person

There was a board ranking named living people by net worth. There is no source for those figures that we can stand behind, so the board is deleted rather than rebuilt.

Estimates, projections or a house view of who is best

Every number on every board is read from a document a reader can open. If it cannot be linked, it is not published.

Corrections

If a figure here is wrong, or a filing has been superseded, write to research@buysidersgroup.com with the document. Corrections are made against the source, not against an opinion of where a firm belongs.

These are rankings of what is on the public record. They are not investment advice, not a recommendation of any manager, and not a measure of how a manager has performed for its investors.
